Fear is one of my favorite things to talk about – as an anxiety-riddled person, fear is my constant companion and sleep paralysis demon. I have two quotes that I use to calm myself when I’m being too scared of life to actually live;
- “Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to act in spite of it.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” – Will Smith.
I would like to add a third; “Fear is just hope wearing contour and concealer.” – JoJo, 2023. For context, Jojo is a great friend of mine.
That statement makes a lot of sense to me. Or maybe, it’s because I have a neuro-divergent way of looking at things in life. I find that statement useful when facing my fear, more than courage, more than the want for things to get better, I have to remember that the fear that I have is simply my mind’s way of reaching for something that it’s not sure that it can have. That’s how I’m choosing to interpret it – I want something but I am too scared to hope for it and therefore nerves are killing me.
When next you’re afraid, try to remember the words of immortal JoJo, “Fear is hope wearing contour and concealer.”
